washing guide

Proper cleaning is essential to maintaining your fursuit’s appearance and ensuring it lasts for years to come. While washing such a valuable investment might feel nerve-wracking, it’s both simple and safe when done correctly.

Avoid Heat at All Costs!
Fursuit materials, including fur and adhesives, are highly sensitive to heat and can be permanently damaged at high temperatures. Always wash your suit in cold or lukewarm water, ideally between 20°C and 30°C. Additionally, air drying is a must—never use a tumble dryer or any heat-based drying method.

HEAD CLEANING

Our fursuit heads are designed to be fully submerged in water for thorough cleaning. The eyes are waterproof, and the rest of the head is made with durable plush and foam materials.

To clean your head, mix a small amount of mild detergent into a bucket or tub of water and let the head soak for approximately 30 minutes. Focus on areas prone to sweat buildup, such as the forehead and neck, and gently scrub the surface for dirt or marks, particularly around high-contact spots like the nose and muzzle.

When it’s time to remove the head from the water, avoid lifting it immediately. The added weight of the absorbed water can strain the seams or adhesives, particularly around delicate parts like the ears. Instead, tilt the bucket and carefully slide the head out, laying it flat on its back. Press gently to squeeze out excess water.

Using a Bissell extractor vacuum or similar device (such as a carpet cleaner) can make the drying process more effective by removing more water than manual squeezing alone. While not mandatory, these tools can be incredibly helpful for maintaining your fursuit over time.

Rinse the head by repeating the soaking process with clean water to ensure all soap is removed, as leftover residue can create an unpleasant texture. After rinsing, brush the fur gently and place the head near a fan to promote airflow and speed up drying. Rotate the head periodically and brush it between checks.

Once completely dry, a light spritz of fursuit-safe spray can keep your head smelling fresh.

For heads that cannot be fully submerged, consider using an extraction vacuum instead. Mix a cleaning solution like Bissell Spot & Stain with a small amount of fabric softener, spray it onto the head, and scrub gently. Use the vacuum to extract the solution, and repeat the process with clean water to rinse thoroughly. Dry as outlined above.

BRUSHING

Regular brushing is key to maintaining the neat, clean, and vibrant appearance of your fursuit.

  • Use a soft brush for the shaved areas of the face to ensure gentle care without damaging the material.

  • For medium-length fur, a standard slicker brush works best, but it’s a good idea to use it in reverse to minimize the risk of pulling out fibers.

  • For longer fur, a wide-tooth comb is the most effective option to detangle without causing damage.

Consistent brushing helps your suit stay in great condition and preserves its quality over time.

TAIL CARE

Tails are typically crafted from fur and polyfill, which means they don’t require frequent washing since they usually don’t come into direct contact with sweat.

However, larger tails that occasionally drag on the ground might pick up dirt. Start by using an extractor vacuum to remove dirt. If needed, you can either machine wash or soak the tail for a deeper clean.

Be mindful that repeated washing can cause the polyfill inside to shift or clump, particularly at the base of the tail, which might require restuffing to restore its shape. This is completely normal and is why washing should be done only when necessary.

If a full wash is required, follow the same steps used for cleaning the body. Some larger tails may include a zipper for removing the stuffing, which makes the cleaning process much easier.

Once washed, gently brush the fur and allow the tail to air dry completely.

Pro Tip: For stubborn stains, a diluted bleach solution can be used for spot cleaning. Hand scrub the affected area and ensure it’s thoroughly rinsed to prevent residue.

EXTRA COMPONENTS

Items like arm sleeves, leg sleeves, wings, and other plush add-ons can be cleaned using the same methods outlined in this guide for other fursuit parts.

For leather accents, a light application of baby oil every few months can help maintain flexibility and prevent cracking. Be sure to use only a small amount to avoid over-saturating the material.

TIPS FOR CARE AND MAINTENANCE

  • Wear under-armor clothing beneath your fursuit to reduce sweat buildup and enhance comfort.

  • A high-quality balaclava is a worthwhile investment for added protection and hygiene.

  • Disinfect your suit on a regular basis to keep it fresh and clean.

  • Always let your suit dry completely before wearing it again to avoid damage or odors.

  • Routine brushing helps maintain your suit’s appearance and longevity.

  • For a pleasant scent, place a few drops of scented oil on a cotton pad and tuck it into hands or feet paws.

  • Use the recommended brushes for your suit to avoid accidental damage while brushing.

  • Consider purchasing a fursuit drying machine online to simplify the cleaning and drying process.

  • Protect your suit from extreme heat; avoid leaving it in hot environments like cars or near heaters, as high temperatures can harm the materials.

  • Use fabric softener sparingly to prevent residue buildup and maintain the softness of the fur.

  • Inspect your suit for loose seams regularly, and address small repairs promptly to prevent further issues.

  • Safeguard against storage pests; if storing your suit for extended periods, check for moths or other pests that could damage the fur or fabric.

  • When wearing your suit outdoors, clean dirt, mud, or grass stains promptly to prevent them from setting.
